4 Ways To Overcome The Fear Of Heights

Are You Afraid Of Heights?

Around 3 to 5 percent of the population is afraid of heights. So immediately you are not the only one that is afraid of heights.

You are probably asking “how can I overcome the fear of heights” which in this article I’m going to show you the things that you can do to overcome the fear of heights.

Most people fear heights because they are scared that something bad will happen like falling off a very high place like a mountain or a skyscraper or other things that are very high in altitude. They become very anxious and scared and will let the fear run in their heads.

To prevent that or to get rid of the fear of heights all together, here are the 4 things that you can do to overcome your fear of heights.

1. Face Your Fear

One of the things that you can do to overcome the fear of heights is to face it heads on. This might sound scary to do, but the honest truth is the only way that you can overcome a fear of heights or to overcome any fear of that matter is to face it. It might be scary at first, but once you face it, it doesn’t really seem that bad and the fear will be a lot smaller than it was before.

I don’t really have a fear of heights but one of my old friends did. Me, My friend, and her friends where at Michigan’s Adventures just hanging out and having fun and all of us except for my friend that was scared of heights want to go on the Ferris wheel. She really didn’t want to go but I and her friends convinced her to go on with us. She did and at first, she was scared but once she was on for a little while, she wasn’t as scared of heights anymore because she faced her fear of heights.

2. Criticize The Fear

It is really important that you question your fear of heights and criticize them instead of ignoring your fear of heights. Ask yourself, “why am I scared of heights” “what caused me to be scared of heights”. When you find out the answer of these questions, then your fear of heights will diminish and you will be able to be on huge Skyscrapers or mountains without much fear running through your head because you found out why and where it came from.

One thing that I forgot to mention is when you figure out why you fear of heights and you found out where it came from it is very important to let that fear go. If you don’t let the fear go, you will be still holding on the fear of heights and will eat you up until you let go of the fear of heights.

3.Breathe

When you are in a high place, you might feel anxious and scared that you might fall or something bad will happen. It is important at that moment to breathe. When you feel anxious and scared, you don’t really think clearly and your brain is going all over the place. When you are breathing, you are calming down and even if the fear is not all the way gone, at least that the fear is significantly less than what it was before.

So when you catch yourself panicking because you are in a high place whether you are on a big mountain, Skyscraper or whatever, breathe. It will make your mind a lot calmer and will allow you to feel less anxious in the situation of being on a high altitude.

4. Get Help

If you think that you can’t tackle this fear on your own, then it is very important to get help of some kind. It is better to do something about your fear than completely ignoring it and that includes getting help from someone.

Some people that can help you with this is a psychiatrist, a friend, a parent, a family member, or maybe someone that you know.

Though in my opinion, the people that you should get help with the most is the people that have overcome the same fear as you do, which in this case is the fear of heights.

They can 100% relate to you and best yet, they have overcome that fear so they know how you feel and they can give you tips on how to overcome it because they overcome it themselves.

Conclusion

Whether you are afraid of heights or something else like the fear of public speaking for example, it is very important that you don’t run away from the fear because if you try to avoid or ignore the fear of heights, then the fear will only grow and get worse.

If you follow or even do at least one of the things that I mentioned in this article, then you will overcome your fear of heights or at least fear it less than before.

    Thanks for these tips. I find as I am getting older I am more fearful of heights. It’s the strangest darn thing. I do push myself to participate in activities that involve height though, I find what works for me is breathing and self talk. I went tree top trekking this past summer with my son and you could find me way up in the trees, on a harness talking to myself, reminding myself that I was safe and wasn’t going to fall to my death. It works and after being up among the trees for sometime I did eventually calm down.

  2. Great article, the point if criticizing your height fears are what helped me greatly. I thought about how it’s not really the height that is the issue, I just don’t trust myself in those situations. I’m like a cartoon character, I’ll always find a way to fall and hurt myself in those situations, hehe.
