4 Ways To Overcome The Fear Of The Dark

Are You Afraid Of The Dark?

According to clinical psychologist John Mayer, just around 11% of the U.S population is afraid of the dark.

That doesn’t sound like much but if you do the math, that’s about 36 million people in the United States that are afraid of the dark and according to John Mayer, more people are afraid of the dark than they are afraid of heights.

I used to have a fear of the dark, but once I faced it, I was no longer scared of the dark anymore.

So in this blog post, I will go over 4 ways you can overcome the fear of the dark.

1.Face It

One of the fastest ways to face any kind of fear is to face it head-on.

It might be intimidating at first and you will be scared when you are facing the fear of the dark, but you have to face it eventually.

I used to be afraid of the dark.

I always had a nightlight on when I went to bed or when it was dark out even in most of my teen years.

One day, I decided that it was time to overcome my fear of the dark.

So I went into my bathroom, I then closed both of my doors (I have 2 doors in my bathroom), and I turned off the lights.

I was scared for a while and I was very tempted to turn on the lights or run out of the bathroom but I didn’t.

About 10 minutes past by and my fear of the dark was diminishing but the fear still lingered.

After about 20 minutes, I wasn’t afraid of the dark anymore.

I came out of the bathroom relived that I overcome the fear of the dark and I looked at the clock and I realized that I was in there for about 40 minutes!

I don’t know if that is considered fast but I think that I overcome my fear pretty quick.

I know that it varies.

For some people, it will take longer to overcome the fear of the dark and for some, it will take a shorter amount of time to overcome the fear.

2.Discuss It With Somebody

Discussing your fear of the dark to somebody can help you overcome the fear as well.

You can discuss it with a parent, a friend, or anybody else that you want to discuss it with.

When you are talking about your fear of the dark with a parent, a friend, or someone else, you may find out why you have the fear in the first place or if you don’t, then maybe the person that you are talking to might know why.

if either of you does, don’t worry it is good that you even discussed it to another person in the first place.

The people that you should discuss it with if you have the chance, is with people who overcome the same fear that you have.

Not only will they relate to you more but they can spot why you are afraid of the dark and can help you overcome it better than anybody else.

But the most important thing is to discuss it with someone.

3.Calm Down Before You Go To Bed

You must be in a calm state before you go to bed.

It is advised that you avoid any caffeinated drinks before you go to bed.

You should also avoid using any electronic devices or watching TV before bed.

instead of doing these things, but on some relaxing music, read a book, or pet your pet for a little bit.

Avoid anything that will make you stressful or anxious before bed.

4. Change Your Thinking

When we think of the word dark what do we think of? Maybe we think of evil, Mabe we think of enemy, maybe we think of scary but what we can do is to notice what other words corresponded with dark to you.

When you do realize them, you can decide if you want the word dark to represent something different or not which in this case you probably do.

Now if you want to change what the word dark represents to you, simply write down or think in your head how you would like to think and feel about the dark.

That is all you have to do if it doesn’t work out the first time, then read of what you wrote down of how you want to think and feel about the dark.

Or if you didn’t write it down, go over in your head of how you want to feel and think about the dark.

A lot of people in the U.S. are afraid of the dark, including me at some point in time.

If you don’t face your fear or don’t do anything to get rid of your fear of the dark, then you will still fear it and you will still suffer from it as well.

If you want, you can comment below your experiences of the dark, how you overcome it, or maybe comment on some questions that you have or need help with overcoming it.

Either way, I will try to reply to you as soon as I can.

That’s all I have for this blog, I hope that you guys are doing great and I hope that you conquer your fears today.

  1. Nice thoughts. I only was afraid of the dark for a brief time in my life. I was 10 or 11 and my new step-brothers had a habit of watching blood-and-guts horror and blaring the sound. With no way to escape it, I became paranoid. Eventually, I got over it, and now I love horror movies. I just make sure to be respectful of others. Thank you for such an enlightening (great word choice) article! 🙂
