Do you procrastinate often? Procrastination has negative effects like poor mental and physical health, poor performance, and an increase in stress and guilt.
A lot of people especially students at schools procrastinate when they are handed a task that seems difficult or doesn’t want to do.
So, I am going over 6 reasons why we procrastinate so you will have a better idea if you might be procrastinating or not.
These are the six that I am going to cover in this article.
- Not Motivated
- Fear Of The Unknown
- Wanting To Be Perfect
- Getting Distracted Easily
- Lack Of Clarity
- You Are Doing The Small Tasks First
I also will have a bonus reason in this article as well but you would have to read through the article to find out what it is.
Now that you know what we will be going over in this article, let us get right into talking about the 6 reasons why you are procrastinating.
1. Not Motivated
The first reason why you are procrastinating is that you are not motivated to do anything.
There could be a whole bunch of reasons why you are not motivated to do anything.
The one major reason why is because of fear.
Negative thoughts can sabotage you from staying motivated to do the things that you want and need to do.
There are a couple of ways to not sabotage yourself but I will only talk about one.
The one way you can do this is to feel the fear and do it anyway.
If you are doing something rather new, you will, of course, fell fear.
Understand that fear will be there and feel it and just do it anyways.
Motivation is a muscle that you have to build, not something that comes once in a while.
It takes work to build that muscle and you have to be consistent with it, but it really pays off once you build the motivation muscle enough.
2. Fear Of The Unknown
The second reason why your procrastinating is that you fear the unknown.
The unknown can be pretty scary because it is out of our comfort zone, we don’t know what will happen, and we do not know if it is safe or not.
Miracles only come from when you do something that is from the unknown so if you want something to change, then you have to go into the unknown.
Even for me, the unknown can be a little scary.
But you can reap the rewards if you go into the unknown.
It holds many treasures, you just have to be brave and go right into it.
After you go into the unknown, you might find out that it was not so bad after all.
3. Wanting To Be Perfect
Wanting to be perfect at everything that you do will drive you into feeling a lot of fear and not being good enough.
There are a whole lot of negatives about trying to be perfect and you honestly should stop.
Trying to be perfect is a good reason why you are procrastinating and one of the easiest ones to spot.
I admit that I sometimes try to be perfect.
I sometimes didn’t do certain tasks or things because I wanted to be perfect at it and not make any mistakes.
Though I have been better at it now, I still occasionally spot that I am procrastinating because I wanted something to be perfect.
If you have the same problem, my advice to you is to recognize if wanting to be perfect is the reason why you are procrastinating.
The next thing to do is to let go of the need to be perfect.
You can do this by writing it down on a piece of paper, writing down who gave you the identity of a person trying to be perfect, write down anything that gives the reason why you identify as that and your experiences with perfectionism.
After you write it down, burn the paper or rip it up and threw it away.
This strangely works, I’ve done it yesterday and it surprisingly works for me.
4. Getting Distracted Easily
Getting distracted easily is another reason why you might be procrastinating.
In this day in age, there are a lot of distractions in our everyday lives.
It is so easy to get distracted from stuff like social media and tv.
If you find that whenever you try to get something done that you know you need to get done and you then find that you are scrolling through social media or playing video games instead, then you are procrastinating.
You need to learn how to stay focused and not give in to all the distractions that are around you.
If you like to play video games for example, then make it a reward when you get everything done.
Being honest, I use this as I still like playing video games and I like watching youtube.
I have lately caught myself watching youtube instead of doing the work I am supposed to do because I was procrastinating on them.
Luckily while I was on youtube, I found a video that shared this reward system to me.
I have tried it for about 2 days and I can already tell that it is helping.
So if you have trouble staying focus and getting distracted easily, then try the reward method, it might work for you.
5. Lack Of Clarity
The fifth reason why you might be procrastinating is that you are lacking clarity.
When we don’t know why we want to take action and do certain things, we lack clarity and the lack of clarity creates chaos in our lives.
The easy solution is to know the reason why you are doing something in the first place.
Find a quiet place where you can think and ask yourself, “why am I doing this”.
Find the answer within and once you find it, you will notice that you will have more clarity on why you are doing the things that you are doing.
After you know you are why you will be able to have a lot of clarity and stop procrastinating on getting the things done.
If you want to learn how to get more clarity in your life, then watch the video toward the top of this section.
6. You Are Doing The Small Tasks First
There is nothing wrong with doing small tasks first especially if it helps you get stuff done during the day.
But, if you are doing the small tasks first and are almost completely avoiding or putting off the big and hard tasks, then you might be procrastinating.
I know that big and hard tasks might be a little intimidating at times but it is important and better, in my opinion, to get the hard tasks done first before the little ones so you don’t have to worry about it later.
You will have to just push through and you might feel like to give up and do the easier ones right away but just get the hard one done.
Not only will you get it done right away but your energy levels will still be higher than doing the hard one last.
Bonus. You Avoid A Task When Feeling Discomfort
The bonus reason for why you might be procrastinating is that you avoid a task when you are feeling uncomfortable.
Maybe you believe that you should not feel discomfort when doing a task and as a result you procrastinate.
I know this from personal experience.
I realize a little bit ago that I procrastinate mainly because I feel discomfort.
I believed that I should not feel discomfort when doing a certain task and when I do, I procrastinate on it until the pain of not doing it is more powerful than the discomfort.
If you feel like this is the reason why you are procrastinating, then accept that you will feel discomfort when you are doing a certain task.
Accepting the discomfort is there and doing the task anyways will go a long way in stopping procrastination.
If you feel like the discomfort is too much for you, then stop doing whatever you are doing and feel the discomfort and let it go.
After you feel like you let it go, you can go back to doing whatever you were doing.
Procrastination sabotages on the things that you need to get done in a given day.
If you notice that you do any of these that I mentioned in the post, then make sure to solve them as soon as you can.
It will bight you in the long run if you do not.
