Things To Not Do When Meditating

Things To Not Do When Meditating

Do you meditate already? Do you have a hard time meditating? I have been meditating for about a year now, and I learned what you need to do when meditating and what not to do while meditating.

I honestly did some of the things that you shouldn’t do while meditating but we all learn from our mistakes.

So in this blog, I’m going to talk about things that you 100% need to avoid when meditating so you will know and so you can have an amazing meditation experience.

Before I get into it, I want to talk about what is meditation just in case you are new to the idea of meditation.

What Is Meditation?

While a lot of people have there own definitions of what meditation is.

The definition of meditation on google is the action or practice of meditating.

Though that definition doesn’t explain what meditation is to its core in my opinion.

So I looked for a better definition for meditation, I soon found a really good definition that was on married webster. This is what the definition says, “to engage in a mental exercise to reach a heightened level of spiritual awareness.

I think that that definition is really good and does explain what meditation is but if you want my definition of what meditation is, then here you go.

My definition of meditation is the mental exercise to calm the mind or improve yourself to be your best version of yourself.

And if you are wondering what the purpose of meditation is, Yoga international has a really good explanation of it.

Yoga International says that the purpose of meditation is to go beyond our mind and experience our essential nature which is described as peace, happiness, and bliss.

It also says that Though the mind itself is the biggest obstacle standing between ourselves and awareness.

Now with that being said, let’s get right into the meditation mistakes that you should avoid at all costs!

Getting Caught Up In Your Thoughts

This is probably in the 101 of what not to do while meditating. It is impossible to meditate and get the benefits out of it if you are focusing or are caught up in your thoughts.

What you need to do to not get caught up in your thoughts is very simple but isn’t easy to do at the start which is just ignoring your thoughts.

When a thought comes up, don’t interact with it, let it be there. If you try to make the thought go away, then your still interacting with it in a certain way and paying attention to it.

So just don’t interact with the thought at all, let it be there, and you will notice that the thought fades away after a while.

It might take a while to do this, but it is so worth it and you will reek the benefits of it.

Not focusing On Your Breath

Have you ever heard of when you are listening to a guided meditation that they say to focus on your breath?

Did you ever wonder why they say focus on your breath?

Well, they say that because by focusing on your breath, you focus less on your thoughts and focus more on your breathing.

Were focus goes grows so if you are focusing on your thoughts, then there will be more thoughts that come up, if you focus on your breathe, then your focus on your thoughts diminish and you let them past by.

Meditating In A Loud Environment

Nothing is better than construction going on while you are meditating and trying to relax.

If you are meditating, you should find a quiet place to do it. When you try and meditate in a loud environment, you will get distracted from whatever is making your environment loud and can’t focus on meditating at all most of the time.

If you somehow can’t find a quiet place to meditate, then meditate in the quietest place in your house. Meditate in your bathroom if you need too.

Sometimes I meditate in the bathroom if my house is a little loud, my brother sometimes plays his guitar when I’m meditating which is annoying sometimes.

So I usually find a place were It’s quiet and I don’t hear the guitar as much or I just wait until he’s done.

Going On Social Media Right After

I’ll be honest I am a little guilty of doing this myself.

When you go on social media or anything on that matter right after you just got done meditating, you start to collect the information that is on social media in the subconscious mind and your mediation was a waste of time.

It is worse if there is a lot of negativity because you will collect all of that negativity in your subconscious mind which I know you don’t want that to happen.

Luckily, I surround myself with a lot of positive people so when I go on social media, I see a lot of positivity instead of negativity which is nice. But thee is the occasional negativity that I see on social media once in a while.

So what you want to do instead is after you are done meditating, just chill and don’t go on anything for about 30 minutes and after that, you can go on social media or anything else.

Not Being Relaxed

Really for you to be able to have good meditation experience, you will have to relax your whole body.

If you don’t relax while you are meditating, then you are not going to have a good experience meditating.

Don’t try to relax your body, just let go of any tension that is on your body.

I would recommend focussing on one area of your body at a time and when you feel like that part of your body is relaxed, then focus on relaxing another part of your body that needs to be relaxed, then repeat this process until your whole body is relaxed.

You will notice that you will feel super relaxed after your done with your meditation.

Conclusion

Once you recognize or know what to avoid or not do when your meditating or about to meditate, then you will have a good meditation experience.

  1. Hey Scott. I could really identify with your article. I struggle with getting totally relaxed and then try focusing on one part at a time, then before I know it I’m thinking about everything and my whole experience falls apart.

You bring up some great points that I will try next because I think I really need to decompress. This will make me more productive too.

    Thanks again,

    Brian

    1. Your welcome Brian. A lot of people struggle with getting relaxed when meditating. When I first began meditating, I struggled with being relaxed. I’m better at it now, but I still struggle to be relaxed when meditating sometimes. Hope that my tips helps you.

  2. This is a really valuable post. I haven’t thought much about what not to do while meditating. I love meditating and find it very relaxing and peaceful while helping me manage my stress levels. As a counsellor, I too help others focus on their breathing, and share with them the value in focussing on breathing helps bring them into the present moment and slows down the thoughts or helps their focus to shift away from the thoughts. Thanks for sharing a valuable post.

    1. your welcome. I didn’t even know meditate counsellers are a thing, that’s pretty cool. I also like meditating, though I sometimes struggle to find time to meditate I still make time for it. I used to do guided meditations a lot but I’m doing more meditating without any meditation music and doing less guided meditations. I am glad that you got some value from this post.
