Things That You Should Avoid Wasting Your Time On

Do you do certain things that eat up your time? Are you wondering what you should avoid wasting your time on?

We all waste our time on something, whether it’s wasting our time on social media, watching tv, playing video games, etc.

But why do we do this in the first place? Are we bored and don’t know what to do? Is it that we are lazy and don’t want to do anything for most of the day? Or is it something else that is deeper than that?

First, I’m going to cover why we waste our time in the first place, then I will explain the things that you should avoid that will eat up your time.

Why Do We Waste Time?

Ther are a lot of reasons why we wast time, but I’m going to talk about three of them.

The three reasons why we wast time is one, we don’t have a plan.

When we don’t have a plan of what were going to do the next day or maybe even the next year, we might end up wasting a lot of time because of it.

To solve this, you can plan out your day beforehand so you will have a plan of what to do the next day.

Two because we made wasting time normally.

We sometimes waste so much time that we become it the norm, the key to cracking the code on this one is to make it not normal to waste time and normal to use our time wisely.

Three we are afraid to give it our best.

We are usually afraid that we will fail at something, we might believe that it was the effort we put in that was the problem instead of the quality of work we put in.

So now that I cover why we waste time, let us get right into things that waste our time that you should avoid at all costs. Let us get right into it!

I used to have a huge problem with procrastination.

I still do at a certain level to this day but it is a lot less prevalent and happens a lot less often than it used to.

If you are procrastinating on something that you want to do or that you need to do, then go ahead and do it.

You never know, you might enjoy it or don’t enjoy it.

It might work out in your favor, or won’t work out in your favor, you will never know if you don’t try.

one personal example is that I was in 11th grade and I was in Woodshop.

I had to make a project and I planned to make a coffee table.

Well, I procrastinated on making it for about 3 months because I was afraid that I was going to use one of the machines wrong and cut my hand off or something in that nature.

I eventually got tired of it and finally got started on my project.

I noticed that I really enjoyed woodshop and I was actually kind of passionate about it.

I then got woodshop the next year and so far I enjoy it still.

So if you are procrastinating on something, then go ahead and do it, you might enjoy it or it will work out in your favor.

Watching A Lot On T.V

When I was a kid, I didn’t watch a heck a lot of TVs because I played video games most of the time.

But I know some of my family members watch tv all day which is a huge waste of time.

I mean don’t get me wrong, some good shows are on tv and sometimes I even watch tv but that is very rare and that usually happens when it’s the holiday season or I got everything done that I have to get done for the day.

So instead of watching tv for most or all of the day, do some things that you need to get done during the day, or you can try something that you have never done before like yoga, meditation or something else.

Just make sure you are not a couch potato the whole day.

Playing A Lot Of Video Games

I used to be guilty of this myself, I used to play open average about 7 hours a day playing video games.

I know that is a lot, but at the time, I wasn’t allowed to play video games on weekdays because of school so the weekends were the only days where I could play.

I continued to do this until I reached the age of about 16.

I realized that playing video games is a waste of time and I could be doing something that can be more beneficial for me.

I still play video games to this day, I just play a lot less than I used to.

On average I play about 30 minutes to an hour a day.

Sometimes I don’t even play because I don’t feel like playing video games sometimes.

Also, I make sure that I get everything that I need to do in the day done and over with before I play video games.

I used to remember I had a conversation with somebody and I asked them, do you play video games? And he said that he used to when he was a kid and now he doesn’t play video games at all.

I asked him why and he said that he doesn’t have time for it and he said that he kind of got bored with it.

At the time, I didn’t understand.

I thought to myself, how can somebody be bored with playing video games and I told myself that I will never get bored of playing video games or something in that nature.

And now, I understand where he is coming from, I see video games as a waste of time and frankly, I get bored with them pretty easily and do something else most of the time because there are a lot of other things that I can do that will benefit me more.

So if you play video games a lot, I highly recommended that you cut out most of the time that you play video games and do something else that is productive or will get you somewhere.

I am not saying that playing video games won’t get you somewhere, but just make it more like a reward after you finish everything that you had to get done during the day.

Going On Social Media A Lot

There are a lot of people that have or go on some type of social media these days whether it’s Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or some other type of social media.

Hey, even my grandma uses social media!

I feel like that a lot of people especially more on the millennial and younger people like myself go on social media way too much.

Like I bet that there are a lot of people out there who pretty much are on social media like 24/7, which is a little sad if you ask me.

Though I have not to spend a whole lot of time on social media like Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram, I spent way to much time on YouTube.

I have installed an app on my phone that shows you how long you have been on your phone for the day.

And you can also check how long you have been on individual apps which is cool.

I checked how much time I spend on YouTube compared to in total and I can’t you not I spend about 3/4 of my time on my phone on YouTube.

If you are wondering how long I’m on my phone, I’m usually on my phone for an average of two hours thirty-six minutes and fifty-three seconds.

The average time that I was on YouTube on my phone is one hour thirty-five minutes and twenty seconds.

If you do the math, that’s about half of my time is on YouTube!

Now it was a little worse beforehand but when I realized this, I decided to stop wasting my time on youtube and instead do something a little more productive like making a blog post everyday(back then I only did one or two a week), or work on my e-mail list, or something else.

I still watch youtube of course but I watch a lot less of it than I’m used too.

So if you find yourself that you are spending way to much time on social media, then make sure to limit your time on it and do something else that is more productive.

Comparing Yourself To Others

I think that everybody does this or at least most people do.

I know that in the past I used to compare myself to others a lot.

I don’t do it that much now but sometimes I catch myself doing it once in a great while.

Comparing yourself to others is a huge waste of time and there are things you can do instead of comparing yourself as other people.

Not only it’s a great waste of time, but you don’t get anything positive out of it too.

People usually compare themselves to others and feel negative about it because they’re not like the other person or the other person is better than you.

Let me just say that the only person that you should compare yourself to is yourself from the past.

I do this whenever I catch myself comparing to other people.

Whenever I catch myself to other people, I quickly compare myself to the past self, and I see that I improved a lot in the past year or so, I’m a completely different person.

Once you stop comparing yourself to other people, not only will you stop wasting so much time comparing yourself, but you will feel a lot better as well.

Doing Something That You Don’t Enjoy Doing

I see a lot of people especially my parents who are doing something that they do not enjoy doing.

I mean I get it that they have to pay the bills and buy foodstuff but they are not putting any effort whatsoever to make their dream a reality which I find sad.

Most people who are working or doing something that they don’t enjoy doing think that they have no other choice but to work at a job that they hate or that they are trapped and can’t get out, which in most cases I find it’s false.

I don’t have a problem when someone is working at someplace that they don’t enjoy temporarily to get somewhere that they want to be but I have a problem when someone is working at someplace that they don’t want to be and not doing anything to make their dream become a reality.

I’m working somewhere that I don’t enjoy but I don’t hate it at the same time.

It’s pretty easy but I don’t want to do it for the rest of my life.

The only reason I got a job in the first place is to pay my monthly expenses for the things that I am using to blog.

So when you are working somewhere that you don’t enjoy, make sure to go towards working on something that you do enjoy, because your life will be a lot better if you do.

That’s all I have in this blog post, I hope that you guys are having a wonderful day and make sure if you have any questions at all or you want to share something related to this post then make sure to comment below and I will respond to you as soon as I can.

Have a good day everyone.

  1. I am so the opposite of this! I feel that sometimes there aren’t enough hours in the day to do the things I want to do. So, I guess there should be a balance between having busy time and free time. I like your suggestion of making a plan for your day to keep you on the right track.

    • Thanks for commenting on my post! I do agree that there should be a balance between busy time and free time. I’m glad you liked my suggestion too. I hope you’re having a good day.

  2. Scott,

Video games are where I spent the majority of my free time in my youth, and I wish I could go back in time and smack myself for all the time I wasted. Life definitely improves when you spend time doing things that you find productive — things that can add present and future value to your life.

I also liked your article on the benefits of planning your day before. Thanks for the good reads!

    • Your welcome. I’m glad that you enjoyed my post on planning your day before too. I feel like that a lot of young kids waste their time playing videogames which are sad. I would honestly smack myself in the face too of all the time I wasted.
